No Touching: Hands-Off Forms of Therapeutic Massage
from:There are many types of massage therapy. Most require the physical manipulation of the body’s flesh. Masseuses use their hands, fingers, thumbs elbows and feet to press, stoke, knead and vibrate muscles, ligaments, arms, back, legs and other body parts. There are, however, types of therapeutic massage requiring little of no hands-on bodywork. The two major types are Therapeutic Touch and Reiki.
Both Therapeutic Touch and Reiki are energetic bodywork. Practitioners work with the energy field of the human body to bring about healing. The energy field is the Universal Life Force. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is the Chi or Qi. In Japanese Traditional Medicine, it is the Ki. In Indian Traditional Medicine, the life force is Prana. This approach is part of many massage therapy practices, particularly those in the category of Asian Massage Therapy.
Therapeutic touch (TT) is a modern interpretation and implementation of ancient practices. It is the collaborative work in the 1970s of Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN and Dora Kunz, a spiritual leader or Metaphysician. Krieger has since written a book on the subject Therapeutic Touch: How to Use Your Hands to Help and to Heal (1979). The work by the two women led nurses away from a sterile form of healing into alternative medical practices. Therapeutic touch is a form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).
There are two basic and fundamental principles governing TT. The first states everyone has an invisible energy field that interacts with the environment. The second states every body is a bilateral system in which the left and right sides mirror each other. The role of the practitioner of TT is to understand the basic principles and work with them to help the client in and through the healing process.
A person undertaking a treatment of TT remains fully clothed. The practitioner, in spit of the name, does not touch the client. The process involves holding the hands away from the body by 2 to 6”. The practitioner or healer follows four basic steps to help rebalance and correct the disturbances in the energy field. In doing so, the healer re-establishes harmony, thereby affecting a cure.
The four basic steps of TT are centering, assessing, unruffling and transferring. The practitioner centers his or herself before the treatment. She or he clears their body of all negative and self-centered thoughts. Once fully grounded, it is time to assess the patient. Hans hover over the energy field and check for health problems. The process of unruffling follows. This is a clearing of the client’s or recipient’s energy field. The final step is to transfer energy to the needy areas. This will help enact the cure.
There is no scientific proof of the effects of TT. Research and scientists remain skeptical about this form of healing. While nurses still continue to practice it, it is less common and popular than another form of no-touch massage therapy. This is Reiki.
Like TT, Reiki is another form of energetic healing. While it can be hands-on, it is more often hands-off coupled with a visualization process. Like TT, Reiki can claim roots in the old practice of "laying on of hands". It can also claim Buddhist monks, possibly Tibetan, as early ancestors.
Yet, like TT, Reiki has modern roots. It dates back to the 1800s and Dr. Mikao Usui (1860-1920). By the early 1900s, it is very popular all across Japan. Practitioners are tapping into the energy of the universal life force. They use their own being to manipulate and balance it. It is a holistic practice promoting healing of body, mind and soul.
There are two basic precepts in Reiki. The person must ask for healing. A practitioner must never attempt to heal someone who does not give permission. The second precept concerns the exchange of energy. In the action of Reiki the recipient and the practitioner exchange energy. If they do not, the process will not be effective.
Unlike TT, Reiki has a distinct Eastern philosophy. You cannot be a true Reiki practitioner without following the basic principles. A practitioner passes them on the client and incorporates them into their own life. They are simple, and similar to some of the 10 commandments of the Christian Bible.
A Reiki practitioner must take each day as it comes so that just for this day, you do not worry. For today, you do not anger. Every day, honor your parents, teachers and elders. Always earn your living through honest means and ways. Show gratitude for every living being. These are simple and effective directions for living life.
The Usui Reiki System is one of 3 levels or degrees. You rise up through these levels to become a Reiki Master. A practitioner uses the learned skills to work the benefits of Reiki. These include relieving both physical and emotional pain. Reiki treatments also accelerate the natural process of healing and detoxify the body. Relaxation, calming of the mind and spirit and a generally improved state of well-being are also products of a Reiki treatment.
