Reading Up on the Subject: Books, Textbooks and magazines on Massage Therapy

from:

If you want to learn about the subject or attend courses, you have to improve your knowledge by reading up on message therapy. There are several ways to access or locate books and other reading material on the subject. You can also locate specialty periodicals and even videos. You may want to update your library card, troll on the internet or wander off to the alternative health book store or large bookstore outlet. Yet, perhaps one of the easiest ways to find out the core books on the subject is to check out the offerings for the massage schools or colleges.

Schools make it easier for students by providing them a course list of books. You can sometimes discover this exact list online. You may have to request it. Either way, you will have suitable information. In fact, no matter what your interest, this is an excellent way to begin your reading. Although many of these books are textbooks, they provide the basics on the subject. Furthermore, you will discover more material on the subject by looking at the "additional and further readings" sections and the reading the Bibliography. These parts of a book or course list provide extra material for exploration. They allow you to discover material on specific areas of the subject, typology, anatomical references and general reference material.

Among these textbooks, you can include Basic Clinical Massage Therapy: Integrating Anatomy and Treatment by James H. Clay and David M. Pound. Another frequently used text is A. Fritzs Mosbys Fundamentals of Therapeutic Massage. Kalyani Premkumar has two works out often used in courses. These are Massage Connection Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology and Pathology a Handbook for Message Therapists (2nd edition).

At least two publishing companies produce series focusing on Comparative and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Among these are Lippencott, Williams & Wilkins (LWW) and Elsevier. Both publish articles, DVDs, videos, flashcards and other materials focusing on this area of alternative medicine. LWW is noted for its Massage Therapy and Bodywork Educational Series. This educational series includes the often used textbook by clay as well as more specific textbooks. There booklist includes Donald W. Scheumanns The Balanced Body: A Guide to Deep Tissue and Neuromuscular Therapy and Hot Stone Massage: A Three-Dimensional Approach by Leslie Bruder, as well as Ruth Werners, A Massage Therapists Guide to Pathology. They are also responsible for the DVDS on Achlands Atlas of Human Anatomy and the Foot Reflexology Chart by the Anatomical chart company. WLL is also the publisher of the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine.

Elsevier Massage Books comprise one of the largest publishing companies of massage-related textbooks in the United States. They are home to the all-time standard medical textbook: Grays Anatomy. A popular and prolific writer in the field of massage is Sandy Fritz. Alone or in collaboration, this author has written Mosby Fundamental of Therapeutic Massage and Mosby Massage Therapy Review. The latter is to help study for exams. The Mosby series also has books on the scientific aspects of therapeutic massage and other related and applicable subjects. There are also more specifically directed books. Sandra K. Anderson has authored The Practice of Shiatsu and Enrique Fabian Fernandez has penned Deep Tissue Massage Therapy Treatment, A Handbook of Neuromuscular Therapy. Sandy Fritz is responsible for Sports and Exercise Massage: Comprehensive Care in Athletics, Fitness and Rehabilitation while Elaine Stillerman has written Prenatal Massage, a Textbook for Pregnancy, Labor and Post-Partum Bodywork.

Other publishers put out less intensive and extensive material. There are many lighter books on the subject. They include the Complete Book of Massage by Clare Maxwell-Hudson, The Handbook of Chinese Massage: Tui Na Techniques to Awaken Mind and Body, Massage a Step-By-Step Guide by Yvonne Worth and Massage A Practical Introduction by Stewart Mitchell. There is also Massage for Dummies by Steve Capellini. You can locate these bodies in bookstores on and offline.

Another good source for books is the local public or college or university library. At many, you can request the purchase of these books. If money is tight, you can also ask for an interlibrary loan. These services are free or available for a minimal charge. Some libraries also have a variety of periodicals or magazines on the subject. In the instance of the specialized periodicals, you will have to obtain them from a specialty bookstore or order them online.
