Massage Therapy in Practice

from:

When you are completed your degree or certificate in massage therapy, you have to pass the certification exam to receive a license. Afterwards, it is up to you to put your skills in massage therapy into practice. You can work in many different places. It all depends upon your personal choice and, of course, the focus of schooling.

Massage therapy in practice embraces many different modes of delivery systems. You can work in an office setting or out in the field. You can perform therapeutic massage on humans or on animals. You can be part of a larger practice or start your own business. Your focus can be on Sports Massage Therapy or Traditional Chinese Massage Therapy.

The field of work you decide upon is determined partially by the extent of your training and learning. You do absorb and learn many aspects of massage during an apprenticeship or on-the-job learning. Yet, much of what you can and will do in the future is predicated by the degree or diploma you have as well as any other credentials. As a result, if you wish to achieve your goals and practice your brand of therapeutic massage, you need to select carefully your school and courses. That said the field of massage therapy is wide-open.
Massage Therapy consists of traditional or classic forms of massage therapy. These include Swedish Massage and Traditional Chinese Massage Therapy. These are the basic standards of Western and Eastern (or Asian) Therapeutic Massage. All other types stem from these. All hybrids or variations find root within this group’s techniques or philosophies.

If you find yourself with an affinity towards Traditional Eastern Massage Therapy, you may find yourself performing Acupressure. You could also do Shiatsu Work, Reflexology, Tui Na or An Mo. This may place you in a clinic of alternative medicine. It could also combine you with conventional medical workers in a hospital or doctor’s office.

You could also find yourself in a similar situation if you opt to follow the paths of Classic Western Massage Therapy. You can perform Swedish Massage Therapy, Rolfing, Hellerwork or Deep Pressure Massage in these same settings. Only the techniques and, perhaps, the tools of the trade differ. It is up to you to decide where you wish to practice. There is also, of course, the questions of feasibility and availability.

Another option is to work in a more common environment. This is in a spa or resort. Massage therapists regularly find employment in these facilities. Some prefer to hire those skilled in such Classic Massage Therapies as Swedish Massage. This is a regular standard at many spas. Yet, there are those luxury spas who have massage therapist on staff skilled in Reflexology and Aromatherapy. Some prefer a well-rounded masseuse who can cater to the whims of their clients. They want the therapists to be able to perform traditional and classic massage as well as the latest trends, including Watsu.

You might find Massage therapy in practice on the playing fields or in the locker rooms. Sports Massage Therapy is a burgeoning field. Players and coaches hire massage practitioners to help before, during and after an event. They need to be able to attend to the requirements of each athlete. This type of massage focuses on specific problems and sports-related issues. It helps if you know about the problems afflicting trained and training athletes. It is also a plus if you like to travel. Olympic teams and local sports teams frequently bring along a massage therapist to meets and other important events.

If you do not like to work with humans, you might want to focus on Veterinary Massage Therapy. This is a field where you can help animals relax. You may work with horses (Equine Massage Therapy), cats or dogs (Small Animal Massage Therapy). This requires specialized training. It also helps to have an empathy with animals. You can work with, or through, any of the many vet clinics and small animal hospitals, to offer your services. As in the case of the conventional medical profession, your reception by medical personnel depends upon their openness to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).

A most tempting offer for many is to work on their own. Massage Therapy in practice may involve you operating a small business. This may be a mobile one. You may take a portable table or pad with you to local offices or businesses. You may also visit the homes of clients. You can also set up your own shop. Whatever road you decide to follow, will depend upon you. From the start-to-the finish, you will decide. You choose the courses and the career. You do the slug work to finish and to find the job. It is your dream. You will work hard to put it into practice.
