Remedial Massage Therapy
from:Remedial Massage Therapy is a form of therapeutic massage to help diagnose and treat forms of physical discomfort and pain. It is a type of complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). It is also holistic in its approach, although in a limited fashion. Practitioners of Remedial Massage Therapy treat the whole body. They try to trace the causal factors back to the original roots. Most practitioners, however, do not address issues of the mind or spirit.
The origins of Remedial Massage Therapy are in Classic or Swedish Massage Therapy. It utilizes many of the same techniques of this form of therapeutic massage. Remedial Massage Therapy is Western in its approach and philosophy. It focuses on the physical. It also relies on a western concept of the anatomy.
The purpose of Remedial Massage Therapy is to be diagnostic in nature. It traces any ailment back to the original source. The point is to find the cause. After locating it, the therapist proceeds to work to address the problem. The goal of Remedial Massage Therapy is to not only address and heal the current symptoms but also to repair or heal the causal factor as well.
The practitioner works with scar tissue and muscular imbalances. It helps to maximize the performance of a body. The skeletal structure and muscular systems are treated and probed. This is a nude or semi-nude massage. Clients wear a robe or cover themselves with a towel or drapery during the massage. The practitioner uses oils to help achieve maximum effects.
The techniques of Remedial Massage Therapists vary. They may be shallow, deep or strong. The employment of each stroke is more vigorous than that of Swedish Massage. It also resembles the application of an adaptation of Sports or Athletic Massage during pre- and post-events.
While many of the techniques are derivative of Swedish Massage, including Deep Tissue Massage, many are specialized. In combination with passive stretching, the therapist may employ Elector-magnetic herbal heat lamps. Using the principles of Aromatherapy and other New Age science, these help soothe the spirit and relax the body. The practitioner also draws upon other branches of massage therapy. He or she may use Trigger Point Therapy, Lymphatic Drainage, Myofascial Release Massage Therapy and Cranio-Sacral Balancing.
Trigger Point Massage Therapy is similar to Eastern Massage Therapy in its focus on specific points of pain. It is a type of Neuromuscular Massage Therapy. The technique focuses on a number of "Trigger Points" as causal factors in creating muscular spasms. The trigger points are the tender regions found in tight muscles. A practitioner of Trigger Point Massage Therapy works on the points to ease the pain by relaxing the muscles. It therefore increases the flow of oxygen and blood.
Myofascial Release is a technique in which the practitioner applies gentle, prolonged pressure to the affected parts to soften up the fascia or connective tissues. Fascia surround the bones, muscles and nerves, to name a few body parts. A therapist uses fingers, palms and elbows in long, stretching strokes to release the tension and stress on both the fascia and muscles. It is to help with ease of movement.
The performance of Lymphatic Drainage is a means to address another body system – the lymph glands. A skilled practitioner will use pressure on certain part points of the body. This will release the blockages of the lymph glands channels. Once the lymph is free to flow, the health of the client’s body will improve.
Cranial-Sacral Balancing is a specialized form of pressure point application. It focuses on only one point of the body to help the client regain his or her health. The therapist places pressure on the base of the skull. The premise is to stop the energy flow, the pulse of life, forcing it to reroute. This halts the development or breaks up an energy cyst. The result is improved health.
All these different types of massage therapy combine to create Remedial Massage. The benefits of such a treatment include the removal of toxins through the stimulation of blood circulation. The practitioner also works to soother the peripheral nervous system. This eases aches and any discomfort. Furthermore, the results of Remedial Massage may be muscles and joints free from stiffness.
